First, try out Celtx, an open-source software program that we discovered and thought would be a great resource for filmmakers, particularly amateur and low-budget filmmakers.

Celtx is free to download and--for the most part--free to operate. The software includes: screenwriting software; pre-visaualization tools for storyboarding and set diagrams; productivity tools to keep you on schedule as you plan and shoot; access to Celtx forums where you can publish your work and get feedback and peer reviews from other Celtx users. (Click here to read more)

You might remember that free "for the most part" bit. The only service that Celtx provides with an associated cost is "Celtx Studios."

Celtx Studios allows for collaboration between colleagues, workflow management and storage tools. It's an opt-in service and regardless the scale of your projects, it's very affordable. The charge is $1 per person, per month, with a minimum of 5 collaborators. So, if you have a crew of 6 that will be working with you one month, the cost will be $5.99. If you have a crew of 25 working with you the next month, the cost is $24.99. (Scroll down for a list of all the tools you and your crew will have access to.) That's a pretty good deal.

Are there any disadvantages to using this pocket-light option? Well, it's not as refined as Final Draft and may have a bit of learning curve, especially for someone new to screenwriting. There's a Help Page on the Celtx Wiki, but it's not as comprehensive and set-in-stone as the Final Draft User Guide.

One member of the FAVES Writers Group has been using Celtx for screenwriting, but so far, he's spent more time researching how the features of basic scriptwriting using this software package work (moving from element to element for example) than he's spent writing.

Still, Celtx costs $249.00 less than a brand new copy of Final Draft.

Our writer's experience aside, if you want to start working on the next "Great American" film, but don't have much of a budget, Celtx can be a great asset--especially if you're a quick study. Take your pet project from a seed of a thought, to a fleshed-out script, to a storyboarded and scheduled shot--the goal of any filmmaker.

Here are features and functionality below as they are laid out on the Celtx Website (be sure to check out their videos to see how this free software package works):
It was clear to us at Wednesday night's show that there was a great deal of interest in screening the other shows as well, so we spoke with The Magic Lantern and reserved this coming Wednesday to show more of the submissions, this go around titled ReelSpokane: Second Reel.

Typically, the 48-Hour Film Festival in Spokane is held in conjunction with First Night Spokane. But festival sponsor North By Northwest has decided to shake things up and hold a second 48-Hour Film Festival in June, probably because the production house is celebrating its 20th anniversary.

32 (!) teams of local filmmakers competed in the last 48HFF, which took place December 4-6th 2009. People's and Judges' Choice winners were screened at First Night, and a handful of 48HFF entries were shown at the Spokane International Film Festival. Click here to read more...

If you've never heard of the 48-Hour Film Festival before--or its inspiration, Cannes Film Festival's 48 Hour Film Project, an international competition held in cities from Salt Lake City to Seoul, South Korea--here's a general outline:

1) You and your team register.
2) Your team attends a general meeting with all other teams in which the parameters of the competition are outlined. For the last 48HFF, each team had to draw a random genre and include the following in their films:
- Prop: Ziploc bag
- Place: A Restuarant
- Line: "Is it your head?...arms?...legs? What? Just tell me."
3) Write, act, film and edit your film within 48 hours. Make sure it's under 5 minutes in length.
4) Submit your film to NXNW.

It's a tall order. Only 26 of the 32 competing teams in December completed their projects. Read NXNW's blogs about the event.

Survival Of The Dead was first released back in September of 2009, making the rounds at festivals such as Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival and Vienna International Film Festival, it was released on DVD in the UK and on Video on Demand in the states earlier this year, but has yet to be seen on the big screen by wide audiences.

Now is your chance to see it at The Cretin Hop here in Spokane, and for the low, low price of free... though The Cretin Hop asks that you make a donation, in this case starting around $3.00. Click here to read more about this new addition to the classic Romero series.

Romero's "of the Dead" series began back in 1968 with the cult classic Night of the Living Dead, which can be watched online for free at Hulu.com.

It was followed in 1978 with the shopping mall horror flick Dawn of the Dead (which was re-made in 2004 directed by Zack Snyder).

Day of the Dead was completed in 1985. We find a small group of military personal and scientists have survived in a world overrun by the dead, who seek out other survivors and a cure for the zombie transformation process.

Ten years later, Land of the Dead (2005), brings us to a walled off city of survivors, led by Dennis Hopper, where the rich have become richer, and the poor have become poorer.

2007's Diary of the Dead is a revisiting of the time when the dead begin to walk told from the experiences of some students from the University of Pittsburgh, who try to reach the home of one of the students parents and find themselves fleeing from zombies as they go.

Now Survival Of The Dead takes us to an island whose inhabitants are not only striving to thrive in the world of zombie hordes, but long for a cure for their family members turned zombie. You can catch George A Romero's Survival Of The Dead at The Cretin Hop (1317 N. Two of the three films are playing at the Magic Lantern this week. The Lantern is screening the first two films in the series, "Red Riding (1974)" and "Red Riding (1980)."(More)
It should be noted the second book in the series, "Red Riding (1977)," has not been produced as a film.

The first film starts out as most crime dramas do. Eager, young reporter Eddie Dunford (Andrew Garfield) is assigned to the story of a girl who disappeared and has now reappeared dead, with angels' wings affixed to her back. As Dunford's investigation progresses, he encounters a police department rife with dubious characters who, more often than not, take matters into their own hands, hands for the most part sullied with corruption. Eventually, a suspect is found and forced into a confession for a crime he may not have committed.

To find out, you'll have to go and catch the film. "Red Riding (1980)" expounds upon the events that take place in the first installment of the series.

Todd McCarthy of Variety summed up his opinion of the film as:

The cumulative impact of "Red Riding," adapted with great finesse by Tony Grisoni ("Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," "Tideland"), is weighty, depressing and confounding: Can human nature be this bad or is it just the way the material has been shaped and slanted? How could England fall so far in a single generation, from one that stood up to Hitler to another that kills its own without blinking, and lacks the official will to deal with it?
And Ann Hornday of the Washington Post says:

Fans of Peace's books should be satisfied by their treatment here, although it bears asking just how many more serial killers, tortured cops and pretentious, fetishistic acts of violence the film audience can withstand.
Rotten Tomatoes has the Red Riding Trilogy currently at a very high 85%.
We have received a dozen entries from all over the region, and will be putting them in front of our judges eyes this week. At the end of this week we will be announcing the selections that will be shown at ReelSpokane Spring 2010's screening <strike>Monday</strike> Wednesday May 26th at 7:00 PM at the <a ?="" href="http://www.reelspokane.com/ReelSpokane%20Spring%202010's%3C/a%3E%20screening %3Cstrike%3EMonday%20%3C/strike%3EWednesday%20May%2026th%20at%207:00%20PM%20at%20the%20%3Ca%20href=" http:="" www.magiclanternspokane.com="">Magic Lantern Theatre.

One note I would like to share is that this time around we have collected an entry fee, and admission to the showing on the 26th will be $5.00 per person. This is a departure from our first showing back in December, but due to costs incurred this time around it was a tough decision we had to make.

The films we have received are all great pieces and we look forward to the tough decisions we will be making this week to select those that we will be showing at the Magic Lantern Theatre, and we hope to see you all there. "Milk" chronicles Milk's political awakening and subsequent political campaigns for office in San Francisco, all of which occurred after Milk turned 40 after a life lived in the the closet. (More)
It's a phenomenal film that brings attention to the career of an inspiring man who is often forgotten in the re-telling of mainstream history. And it's a truly American story of one citizen overcoming seemingly impossible odds in the fight for civil rights.

Special guest Rick Circillo, a friend of Milk's will introduce the film. He'll talk a bit about being involved with Milk's campaigns and working in Milk's camera shop.

The film won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for Best Picture at the 2009 Academy Awards. Watch the trailer:

According to one of the organizers, the festival's done well this year, with more non-student community members attending than ever before! Ticket proceeds go to funding for next year's festival, so high attendance ensures that SFCC brings more quality foreign films to Spokane. Some of the films had their first (and only) showings in Spokane through the SFCC International Film Festival, so thanks to SFCC for bringing them to town!

Next Tuesday, May 18th, the festival will screen Deepa Metha's third installment in her Fire/Earth/Water trilogy. Set in 1938, "Water" (2005) examines the rigidity of roles assigned to widows and the possibilities of increased freedom for these women at a pivotal moment in Indian history, themes that parallel those in many of Metha's other films.

Here's an excerpt from an article in the Inlander:

[Water] tells the story of Hindu widows forced to live in a spare ashram. Eight-year-old Chuyia is a child-wife-turned-widow who’s perhaps doomed to spend her entire life in the “widow’s house.” Kalyani is a beautiful widow pimped out by the ashram’s leader to pay the bills. She falls in love with one of Gandhi’s followers, but her past may come to haunt her future.
This Wednesday May 12th at 7 PM the Spokane International Film Festival is bringing us another intriguing film as a part of their Professor's Series, this time around we are being treated to Roy Andersson's You, The Living (Du Levande) at The Magic Lantern.

Johan Carlsson, the films production manager speaks about the interesting process of making this film:

"This movie will take 3 years of intensive full time work to shoot. It's not the shootings themselves that take time, but the work on creating the environments. We build almost all sets...
in studio, even those which take place outdoors. Most of the time we start from the sketches by Roy, sometimes we build simple test sets to be able to decide what the environments should look like. We put much effort into all parts of the picture and a lot of tests to reach the right result.

Vigil, using his "no-budget production company," Running Stills, pulled together a bunch of friends and other zombie-lovers, slathered them in fake blood and created a 35-minute zombie movie. Complete with lesbian zombie kisses and naked zombie attacks, Vigil's "Mad Blood" is the kind of zombie film a young John Waters might have made. Watch videos by Running Stills on Myspace.
This week's festival selection is "Sin Nombre" (2009).

We're going to steal a description of the film from the Inlander (incidentally, written by the same FAVES member writing this blog entry):

This gritty crime thriller from Mexico follows Casper, a former Central American street gang member on the run from his former gang, and Sayra, a Honduran refugee, as they attempt to ride northbound trains to the United States. Squatting in train cars and hiding from authorities, they endure an arduous journey for a chance at a new life. The film won Best Cinematography and Best Director at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival. (Read the whole story at the Inlander)

The film was written and directed by Cary Fukunaga, who researched for the film by traveling with immigrants on their way northward. Check out a great interview with Cary Fukunaga from "Review Fix. Deigo Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal of "Y Tu Mama Tambien" and "Motorcycle Diaries" fame acted as executive producers on the film.
When people got dressed up in suits and dresses with pearls just to sit in the theatre?

Thanks to the Bing Theater's "Classic Movies at the Bing" series, you can make it a grand night again. Throw on your top hats and high heels for "High Society" (1956) featuring a star-studded cast with Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Frank Sinatra playing the top roles.

On the eve of her wedding to wealthy businessman Mike Connor (Sinatra), Tracy Lord (Kelly) is besieged by her ex-husband, the charming CK Dexter-Haven (Crosby), who clearly wants her back. If the story and the names sound familiar, that's because it's a musical remake of the classic "The Philadelphia Story" (1940) with the equally star-studded cast of Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart. "High Society" is flashier than the original, done in eye-popping technicolor and with lots of jazz-tinged tunes.

This time around, we've lengthened the time limit on films from five to thirty minutes, so whether your short is thirty seconds long or just barely under half an hour, your film is eligible for submission.
ReelSpokane submissions will be judged by panel made up of local members of the Spokane film community, and only the best films will be chosen to screen. The show will be 90 minutes long, so make sure you send us your top-notch work!

(1) SOCIAL! Tuesday, April 27th at 5:30pm. The social was originally scheduled to take place at Le Bon Bon (adjacent to the Garland), but it appears that Le Bon Bon is not yet open, so we're going to meet down the street at the Brown Derby Tavern. After the social, walk over to the Garland for "Fremde Haut," which will be shown by the SFCC International Film Festival at 7pm.
We're currently searching for great all-ages venues for socials -- let us know if you have any suggestions!

(2) NEWSLETTER! We're producing weekly newsletters on film goings-on in Spokane, which will go out every Monday. We want to make sure that we're publishing as much valuable info as we can, so help us out:
Tell us if there's something cool and film-related happening in town.
Tell us if you're working on a project and want to tell people about it.
Tell us if you want to put together a community film project and need help. Tell your friends to join our e-mail list.
We'll spread the word about your events and projects, and those you support. Email us at: announcements@favesblog.com.

(3) REEL SPOKANE! Stay tuned for announcement later this week about a ReelSpokane event taking place in May. Get ready local filmmakers!
